Mighty Earth Geospatial Data Internship

Who We Are:
Mighty Earth is a global campaign organization that works to protect tropical forests and the climate with staff based around the world. We have played a leading role in persuading the world’s largest food and agriculture companies to adopt policies to eliminate deforestation and human rights abuse from their supply chains and driven adoption of multi-billion-dollar shifts to clean energy.

Who We Are Looking For:
Mighty Earth is accepting applications for a Geospatial Data Intern for our Rapid Response Deforestation Monitoring program. This is a summer internship opportunity for a strategic thinker with entry-level geospatial data and analysis abilities who is passionate about protecting the environment and building a more just world. This internship will specifically focus on using geospatial research to stop deforestation in its tracks.

As part of our internship program, you will work with our talented staff and learn some of the fundamentals of environmental advocacy and campaign work–ranging from research, data analysis and persuasive writing to planning deforestation investigations and holding corporations accountable for environmental degradation.

If you are a self-starter who can work both independently and shoulder-to-shoulder with our team; can conduct research, think creatively, and write persuasively; and care deeply about addressing some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges, this is the internship for you. You also have experience with point-and-click GIS software and/or programming-based data analysis and are excited to apply your skills to real-world problems.

Over the course of your internship, you will work with Mighty Earth’s Rapid Response deforestation monitoring team to fight deforestation and climate change by working to protect native ecosystems and local communities from encroachment by the palm oil, soy, cattle, cocoa, rubber, and/or transition mineral industries.

As an Geospatial Data Intern, your responsibilities may include:

  • Perform land use and land cover spatial (GIS) analysis to detect recent instances of deforestation primarily related to agricultural or mineral expansion
  • Conduct detailed supply chain research on Rapid Response cases to determine corporate links deforestation using corporate traceability data and grievance logs, as well as other supply chain data when available
  • Translate the above GIS analysis and supply chain research into blogs and parts of reports, participating in the content, design and quality review process
  • Coordinate data management of internal and public Rapid Response databases
  • Work with and help manage relationships with GIS mapping consultants and other stakeholders
  • Create and/or update interactive deforestation monitoring maps
  • Author/edit campaign materials as needed

Qualifications
Required:

  • Commitment to and thoughtful perspectives on environment and social justice issues
  • Familiarity with GIS mapping software
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively
  • Honed organizational skills and the ability to manage simultaneous projects
  • Fluent in English

Preferred:

  • Additional programming skills–particularly familiarity with JavaScript and/or Python
  • Additional language skills
  • Campaign experience (political or issue focused)
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working on issues related to climate change and deforestation

Details:
This internship is a full-time internship and the pay is $800 a week. You will work on a hybrid schedule, both in person and remotely from our Washington, DC office. The internship will run from 8 to 12 weeks. You will report to our Rapid Response program manager as well as interact with junior and senior staff.
