Senior Director, Development

Mighty Earth is accepting applications for our Senior Director, Development opening, a critical leadership role in our mission to secure a living planet. As the Development Director, you will build the resources to expand our work across the globe and build the power to run high-level campaigns to convince the world’s largest companies to protect forests, end climate pollution, and transform the way food is produced. You will be a part of our leadership team, manage and build our development programs while working closely with our executive team, and play a lead role in building our individual giving program.

Founded in 2015, Mighty Earth is a global advocacy organization working to defend a living planet. Our goal is to protect half of Earth for Nature and secure a climate that allows life to flourish. Mighty Earth achieves transformative change by creating a “perfect storm” of campaigns, communications, and practical engagement with decision-makers to rapidly transform entire industries and government policy. 

We have played a leading role in driving the transformation of whole industries and government policy to stop destruction of tropical rainforests, transform agriculture, and drive multi-billion-dollar shifts to clean energy. Through our campaigns, we seek to make significant progress to support impacted people around the world, especially Indigenous communities, communities of color and low-income communities, including by protecting land rights and combatting modern slavery. 

Your responsibilities:

As Mighty Earth’s Senior Director of Development, you will have the opportunity to work closely with our CEO and Founder, a seasoned fundraiser; a grants consultant; and our Deputy Director to build the systems, vision, and plans to significantly increase Mighty Earth’s impact and impact in the world. You will manage all development programs, with a major focus on ramping up our major giving program. You’ll also partner with our international team members based in Europe, Asia, and Africa to bring the stories of their work directly to current and potential philanthropic partners. You’ll work in a dynamic, mission-oriented, and global environment and your day to day responsibilities will include: 

  • Developing and executing long-range fundraising plans that align to the organization’s plans.
  • Working with our CEO to build and execute an individual donor campaign and plan, with a major emphasis on major giving to raise programmatic, operating, and sponsorship support. 
  • Developing and executing fundraising plans with key Mighty Earth staff. Working with our Campaign Directors to identify prospects, arrange meetings, and logistics in the US and Europe.
  • Managing and building a portfolio of major donors, securing gifts and building long-term relationships with our growing list of philanthropic partners. 
  • Leading our process for identifying, cultivating, and stewarding for a growing portfolio of donors and prospects. 
  • Coordinating closely with the CEO to support his work with his fundraising portfolio and strategize.
  • Working closely with our grants consultant, ensuring our foundation fundraising work is integrated with our overall fundraising plan and stepping in and supporting the CEO as needed.
  • Supporting the board of directors in relationship management of major donors and prospects as needed. Provide regular updates and seek input.
  • Serving on Mighty Earth’s leadership team to give input into the direction of the organization
  • Managing our fundraising database.
  • Working with our Digital Director to incorporate digital fundraising into fundraising plan and ensure coordination
  • Collaborating with the Communications and program departments to ensure we are highlighting Mighty Earth’s best and most relevant work. 
  • Working with our finance staff to coordinate reporting and compliance, including maintaining accurate and timely records and reporting. 

What we’re looking for in you: 

  • You have at least eight years of work experience, including significant experience as a fundraiser and in a development leaderships role, preferably including some experience with nonprofit, environmental, social justice, or mission-driven advocacy organizations;
  • You have a successful track record in major gifts fundraising.
  • You have strong interpersonal, written and communication skills.
  • You have a record of success in generating significant commitments from foundations and/or government donors through grants.
  • You have solid project management skills; ability to work independently and successfully manage multiple projects with competing deadlines; excellent attention to detail. 
  • You have a passion for protecting the environment and advancing a more just society.
  • You have the ability to network and initiate and build relationships with prospective individual and foundation donors. 
  • You have a familiarity with financial information, including the ability to evaluate grant budgets. 
  • You have experience working with people from a variety of ethnic, racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. Cross-cultural competencies and experience in the U.S. or internationally.
  • You are committed to a diverse, equitable and inclusive work environment. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel within the US as well as some international trips, and to work some evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • You have experience working with environmental donors.
  • You have experience ramping a development program at a smaller nonprofit.
  • You have experience working with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • You have experience with digital fundraising programs.

Details: This is a full-time position and we have a preference for candidates based in Washington, DC. area. We are open to candidates based in other U.S. locations, with a preference for eastern time zone locations. The position involves international travel. During the coronavirus pandemic, our staff just recently resumed travel in a more limited capacity. You will report to our Deputy Director, work very closely with our CEO and also work closely with our operations team, and our Strategic Advisor.

Interview process: Our interview process involves a phone interview, two video interviews, a candidate exercise, and reference calls for candidates advancing in our process. 

Compensation and benefits: The salary range for this position is $115,000 – $150,000, depending on experience. We have a generous benefits package including group health insurance, dental benefits, unlimited vacation time, paid holidays, and a 401(k) plan.
