Senior Director, Finance and Grants

Mighty Earth, a global environmental advocacy nonprofit, is accepting applications for our Senior Director, Finance and Grants job opening. We’re looking for talented candidates to lead our grants management and financial work to ensure we continue to strengthen our financial systems, grant compliance, and infrastructure. You will be an important part of our leadership team working to secure a living planet.

Desired Background and Responsibilities

As the Senior Director of Finance and Grants, you will manage and provide leadership for our financial and compliance work, and provide strategic input to the organization’s CEO, senior leadership, and staff. Our ideal candidate will have a high degree of smarts, be able to drive priorities and deadlines independently, provide strategic guidance and direction, and be detail oriented. They will have significant experience with finance management and compliance in the non-profit sector. 

This is an excellent opportunity to work closely with staff across the organization, including our international staff, and other key stakeholders. Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Working as a strategic partner to the Deputy Director and CEO in the annual budgeting and Board approval processes. 
  • Partner closely with our leadership team, program leads, and our Board of Directors to monitor organizational finances, make budget projections, analyze trends and develop new tools. Help the CEO and the Board of Directors plan strategically for Mighty Earth’s sustainable financial success.
  • Support development staff and program directors to create realistic budgets for grants, and ensure their proper implementation and compliance. Conduct monthly budget meetings with staff and track expenditures for programs and against funder approved budgets.
  • Work with outsourced accounting to monitor the General Ledger to ensure proper coding and allocation of expenses. 
  • Represent Mighty Earth, maintain relationships, and collaborate with banks, donors, vendors, and outside consultants. Ensure accurate accounting and compliance measures that meet all the expectations of our donors and meet all international, federal, and state requirements. 
  • Review and approve terms of all contractor, sub-grantee, funder, and other organizational agreements. Manage the signature process, track all expectations and deliverables, and monitor invoicing due dates. 
  • Manage the annual audit process. Ensure compliance of internal financial policies and update as necessary to ensure nonprofit best practices. Update the Mighty Earth Finance Manual, the Finance Intranet, and prepare onboarding and other staff training resources for staff on policies and procedures.

Who You Are:

Required qualifications:

  • You have a Bachelor’s Degree in finance, accounting or equivalent work experience and professional training and you have at least eight years of work experience.
  • You can translate financial analysis and numbers into real world applications and implications for strategy. You are able to clearly communicate your analysis to staff so that they can make informed decisions. You offer insight and guidance in addition to reporting.
  • You have proven experience with non-profit financial management and grant processes, including working with development staff, grant reporting, and ensuring funder compliance. 
  • You have previous experience working with Quickbooks, data entry, and payroll systems and are responsible with confidential information. 
  • You enjoy working with numbers, and identifying trends and patterns. You love working with spreadsheets and data, and are proficient in programs like Excel.
  • You have an interest in environmental and social justice issues.
  • You are organized and can easily stay on top of a calendar of timely and important tasks throughout the year. You see projects through to the end.
  • You work well with your colleagues, are a team player and know how to “manage up.”
  • You have experience and comfort working with people from a variety of backgrounds, including ethnic, racial, sexual, and religious orientations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • You have experience working with foundations, government grantors, and ideally international government funders.
  • You have a CPA or MBA.
  • You have strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • You are proactive and willing to reach out to a colleague to sort out an issue or solve problems.
  • You can get up to speed quickly on new programs and technology. We use: Microsoft Office, Expensify, Harvest, Basecamp, and Quickbooks, among others.

Details: Candidates should be based in the Washington, D.C. area. During the pandemic, our D.C. based staff mainly works from home but they have access to the office. The safety of our team is a top priority. We will resume working from our office, travel, and having in-person meetings when it is safe to do so. You will report to our Deputy Director and work closely with external accounting support staff, the CEO, program leads, and the Operations Associate.

Compensation and benefits: The salary range for this position is $96,000 – $125,000, depending on experience. We provide a generous benefits package including group health insurance, dental benefits, 401(k) plan, paid holidays, and unlimited vacation..
