Freelancer PHP/WordPress Developer/Technical Lead

Mighty Earth, a global environmental NGO based in the US, is looking for a freelance PHP/WordPress developer to help deliver technological change at the organisation.

Mighty Earth is embarking on a period of change in regard to our digital tools and website. We in the early stages of migrating our campaigning, advocacy, and fundraising platform to a new provider. In addition, we plan to redevelop the Mighty Earth website to help us achieve our key objectives as an organisation.

Our key digital objectives are:

  • To grow the Mighty Earth supporter list
  • To raise more money from our supporters
  • To grow our presence on social media and establish a high performing acquisition programme

To achieve those goals, we need to improve our technology, systems and tools. With the support of this freelancer, we will be starting our journey by

  • Migrating to a new advocacy and fundraising platform.
  • Developing a new website.
  • Regularly customising, redesigning and optimisation our pages to improve conversions and ROI.

About the role:

The freelance WordPress Developer/Technical Lead will assist overseeing and optimising our web and technology architecture with an eye towards our long-term goals.

As a global organisation, our sites and platforms must be multilingual, and the content is generally maintained by staff with limited technological knowledge. The relevant web domain includes our main website as well as a campaign specific action site, custom web tools, and web-based elements that support our campaigning for example donation, petitions, other action-orientated pages.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Digital Director in delivering new tools, technology platforms and a new website.
  • Assist in handling bugs, technical problems, being hands-on when needed.
  • Work with a diverse set of stakeholders including campaigners, digital consultants, designers, web and design agencies, and third-party suppliers.
  • Engage and manage external expertise where needed.
  • Assist with web development aspect of high-profile projects. This includes:
    • Integrating new fundraising and advocacy platform
    • Development of new Mighty Earth website
    • hands-on coding and taking care of the crucial parts of the work
    • provide feedback on the feasibility of concepts, budgets, and timelines

Key Experience and Skills:

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in web or application development
  • Experience with WordPress or other web content management systems
  • PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with the following tools:
    • WordPress multisite
    • WP Engine
    • Cloudflare
    • Action Network, Engaging Networks
    • Act Blue, Stripe 
  • Fluency in English

Desirable, but not essential:

  • Experience working for a progressive organisation, previous involvement in grassroots movements and change-making, and/or a strong understanding of the potential of technology to support activism
  • Understanding of the opportunities and challenges in activism tech and support the team to find new ways to use web technologies to help win campaigns and build movements.

Location: Remote. But must be within Eastern Time (New York) to East European time (Athens, Kiev, Helsinki) 

We are flexible on hours/days but suggest initially the equivalent of 1-2 day a week (to be negotiated) until at least the end of the year (mid-December). There is the possibility of a contract extension and/or more hours.

Examples of pay rate (to be negotiated): 
UK = £400-£500 per day (equivalent of 8 hours a day) 
USA = $500-$600 per day (equivalent of 8 hours a day) 
Berlin = €450-€550 per day (equivalent of 8 hours a day)
