Mighty Earth’s Rapid Response system monitors more than 3500 oil palm concessions in Indonesia and Malaysia, covering about 21 million hectares, an area more than twice the size of Portugal. Since 2017, our Rapid Response monitoring started holding the palm oil industry accountable for compliance with their No Deforestation, No Peatland development, and No Exploitation (NDPE) policies and has contributed to a huge decrease in deforestation and peatland development for oil palm and other commodities. Because of this decrease in deforestation and peatland development, our system identifies fewer and often small cases, but we are still closely monitoring instances of deforestation and noncompliance with NDPE commitments.
