A WILDER PLANET.

The goal of protecting Nature underpins all our work. It inspires and drives us to secure a future that allows life to flourish.

In France, nature is very rich. But it is also threatened. France is the only country to have 5 of the world’s biodiversity “hotspots,” and it ranks 8th in the world for the number of threatened animal and plant species.

But France has an indirect role in the loss of biodiversity that is perhaps even greater than its direct impact, notably through its impact on the Amazon or the forgotten jewel that is the Cerrado biome. This impact is directly linked to the meat industry.

France is the headquarters of the main retailers in the two countries with the most biodiversity in the world: Brazil and Colombia. The beef produced in those countries is mainly sold locally, and that beef is the main cause of deforestation of the natural ecosystems, particularly the Amazon.

These French groups are also responsible for the future of the forests, and must take responsibility for their supply chains in these countries. Mighty Earth’s research shows that their vigilance is lacking, that’s why we are regularly monitoring their practices.

France is also one of the main importers of soy into Europe to feed livestock. Most of this soy for feed comes from Brazil and the Cerrado region, where France has a very large footprint and is strongly commercially linked to the worst players.

French groups are also leaders in the dairy sector, particularly in Europe and South America. The impact of animal feed and pastures on living organisms in these sectors is also immense.

  • 61%

of imported soy into France for livestock comes from Brazil

  • 76%

of beef produced in Brazil is sold in Brazil, where the leading supermarkets are French

Take Action

Carrefour: Stop Deforestation

BEHIND ITS RHETORIC ON SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION, CARREFOUR IS COMPLICIT IN DEFORESTATION! The Group works with meat suppliers and soya farmers who are burning up the Amazon and the Cerrado, causing irreparable damage to local populations and biodiversity and exacerbating climate change.
