Roger Smith

Campaign Director

Roger Smith is Japan Project Manager for Mighty Earth, working to support Japan’s transition beyond coal. He coordinates the Sumitomo Corporation campaign to move the corporate giant away from coal and destructive biomass. He has worked in Japan since 2014, when he moved to the Town of Matsushima to promote the reconstruction of the tsunami-hit Tohoku region.

Before coming to Japan, Roger was co-director of Clean Water Action’s Connecticut office. He led the state global warming coalition that resulted in national precedent-setting state climate pollution laws in 2004 and 2008. In 2006, this work was featured in Japan’s largest newspaper, the Yomiuri Shimbun. From 2008-2011 he coordinated a statewide advocacy effort which led to the creation of a billion-dollar market for commercial solar power in Connecticut. Following these state-level successes he worked to advise municipalities across the state on reducing their carbon emissions and energy use.
