Julian Oram

Julian Oram has more than two decades of experience working on international development and environmental policy issues, specializing in sustainable agricultural production systems and supply chains. Over recent years, Julian has been engaged as a consultant writer, researcher and strategy advisor for civil society organizations in Europe, Africa and the USA, including Mighty Earth, Greenpeace Africa, Oxfam, ActionAid International, The Fairtrade Foundation and the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa.

Julian has also held senior roles within several non-profit organizations. He worked as Head of the Land Team at Global Witness in the UK, where he led the organization’s work on rubber, helping communities dispossessed by large plantations in the Mekong region to regain their land. In this role he also served as the only foreign NGO representative in an expert group formed by the Chinese government to develop new sustainability guidelines for rubber companies.  Previously, Julian spent three years as the Senior Political and Business Advisor on Agriculture for Greenpeace International, and also served three years at the World Development Movement as Head of Policy and Campaigns. Other prior roles include Team Leader of the Right to Food team at ActionAid UK, and Senior Researcher at the New Economics Foundation.

Julian holds a BA in Geography with International Development Studies from the University of Sussex, and a Masters degree in Rural Resources and Environmental Policy from Imperial College, University of London. His PhD – awarded in 2005 from University College, Cork, Ireland – analyzed the impacts of globalization on rural livelihoods in the Philippines. Julian is based in London, UK.
